Teaches Important Information, Promotes Values, and Develops Skills
Patriot Challenge is different from most question and answer games because it focuses players on important information, not trivia, about America. A panel of classroom educators from elementary school to college-level developed the educational content of the game, which is based on nationwide curriculum standards. Playing the game reinforces what children are learning in school.
Citizens need to have a common base of knowledge that defines their American identity and therefore, provides a basis for national unity. The game models this concept by focusing its content on critical information, key concepts, and cultural values that are universally accepted and promoted in various educational settings. The game is broad in scope and is not intended to be comprehensive in all areas of study.
The game promotes American values, responsible citizenship and active participation in the democratic process. Game play creates an environment where players practice and model for each other teamwork, freedom of expression, and tolerance. The game is historical, yet contemporary, encouraging players to value history and its lessons as they address and debate contemporary issues of today.
Creates a Stimulating Learning Environment
Patriot Challenge creates a unique learning experience by using colorful stamp art to create a visual story of people, places, and events. These miniature works of art are fascinating, informative, and reinforcing of key concepts and information. A magnifying glass is provided so players can search for answers hidden in the stamps or on the game board, adding another element of fun and discovery to the learning process.
Patriot Challenge simulates citizen involvement in the democratic process. The game engages the players in discussions, demonstrations, and group interactions requiring players to analyze situations, see different points of view, and develop their own opinions. Player involvement is required throughout the game: all players take turns being the monitor; players must be alert to opportunities where they can earn extra points; and players team up to judge the responses on bonus questions. Game play is non-stop and there is no waiting around for your turn.
Players will also learn from each other while playing the game. Many questions ask for opinions and personal examples, creating an opportunity for players to learn from each other by sharing their knowledge and experience. In addition, players will learn new things they didn't know about the other players, hopefully resulting in increased respect and a deepening of relationships.
Uses Educational Principles to Enhance Learning
The questions are divided into three educational levels which are represented by red, white and blue cards:
White cards - Elementary school
Blue cards - Middle school
Red cards - High school
Each color incorporates subject matter that is commonly taught at those grade levels. This makes the game challenging for players of all ages. Graduated question cards allow younger players to learn at and above their grade level, while providing a good review of information for older players. It also offers a variety of ways the game can be used in educational settings.
The Patriot Challenge game takes players beyond rote recall to higher levels of learning by asking them to apply their knowledge in discussions and demonstrations. These higher level learning objectives facilitate the integration of knowledge into daily life. It also makes the game more fun and enhances learning for all players.
